Why did you choose this?

chestnuts are the best please grow them

I wanted to start Chestnuts for deer and possible roasting. And I need two for pollination. (Auburn)

We lived in Europe and loved to eat hot chestnuts! We hope these will thrive at our house. The trees are also very beautiful.

I have seen these nuts and they are awesome

is it resistant to chestnut disease like american chestnut blight?

Colossal is an American chestnut, which is not blight-resistant. Here is a link to a Chinese Chestnut, which is resistant:http://www.starkbros.com/products/nut-trees/chestnut-trees/chinese-chestnut

Can I use two of these for Pollination?

A male and female tree is necessary for pollination

if i order 2 colossal chestnut trees will that be enogh for the pollination needed?

The same variety cannot pollinate itself. You will need another chestnut variety with a similar bloom time in order for good pollination to occur. One species cannot pollinate another.

How big are these trees when shipped?

We appreciate you reaching out to us. These were being shipped up to 3 feet tall.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!

I live on the border of Wisconsin and Michigan in the u.p.. I have one chestnut tree about 10' tall and 2 others seedlings this year. What might you suggest we purchase to cross pollination?

Colosssal would be a great choice.

Will my existing Chinese chestnut tree pollinate the Colossal chestnut?

Yes

Can I plant 2 of these to pollinate each other?

No, this tree is pollen-sterile, meaning it can't even pollinate another tree. You need at least two seedlings or another chestnut variety to pollinate Colossal.

My zip code (95959) is for Nevada City, the origin of the tree. Yet you say that the tree is incompatible with my zone. How can that be???

It might be that your zone was updated to 9A when the USDA revamped their zone map and data. Since 9A is a cooler part of a zone 9, and fairly similar to a zone 8B, then you should still be able to grow this variety successfully there, especially since it originated from your location.

you are selling a colossal chestnut but have no cross pollinators for sale. What are my options. Can I use 2 colossal chestnuts or do I need to wait until you have cross pollinators in stock?

growing well
Have had this in the ground and all is well. Plant arrived happy and healthy and is doing well through this Spring. Had to cage them as the deer will browse and horn them. Hopefully in a few years it will be bearing well. Just like my other trees from Stark. Have tried bare root trees from other vendors with mixed success, these already rooted and in soil are doing better and will take at least one less year to bear.

Looks good so far
My trees arrived in good condition and were planted the day they arrived. They are now in their second year and appear to still be healthy and growing. I have an older Chestnut tree that produces lots of nuts each year which is why I bought two more to replace two English Walnut trees that did not produce nuts after 17 years. I live in Southern Illinois.

Alow to bear but a beautiful tree
I planted a Stark Bros. Colossal chestnut tree and recommended pollinator 5 years ago. Slow growing, but required no care other than mild pruning. Pollinator put out catkins at year 4, and Colossal produced its first burr (3 chestnuts) this year. Think we’re gonna be alright!

Bare root
I discovered through this transaction that I will not buy bare root trees ever again. The mortality rate was high even though we potted in miracle grow and each tree was on it’s own drip emitter... to no avail
