Growing the Barcelona Filbert Hazelnut Tree

The Barcelona Filbert Hazelnut Tree prefers well-drained soil and ample sunlight. In regions with hot summers, consider offering filtered shade protection to prevent sunburn and ensure optimal fruit development. With its robust growth habit, the Barcelona Filbert Hazelnut Tree matures to a height and width of 15–18 feet, forming a substantial presence in any landscape. Its versatility extends to its adaptability to both tree and shrub forms, offering flexibility in garden design and management.

This heavy-bearing tree requires cross-pollination, so be sure to plant another Filbert Hazelnut variety nearby to facilitate fruit set and maximize yields. Train the tree to your preferred form, whether as a tree or shrub, through straightforward pruning and shaping techniques.

Why did you choose this?

Had 1 wanted more

I have planted other nut trees and wanted to try hazelnuts.

I couldn't pass on this deal!!!!!!

Small fast producing nut tree

How hard is it to harvest filberts with squirrels around??

Here in mid Michigan the second week of August is when the squirrels strip the trees of nuts completely within a week. I have made a new planting and it is working out great. Planted away from other trees so the squirrels can't jump from them to my nut trees. I enclosed the filberts with a grounded 5 foot chicken wire fence with an electric fence wire at the top. Problem solved!

Do i need two different hazelnut shrubs for pollenation?

All four filbert varieties offered by Stark Bros say you should have another variety for best yield. I believe some other varieties may not need a second for pollination.

How susceptible is this variety to Eastern Filbert Blight?

While the Barcelona variety isn't highly susceptible to Eastern Filbert Blight, if the disease is highly prevalent in the area, then Barcelona may exhibit some susceptibility.

Do deer like them and which variety would be good for deer?

Deer absolutely love them. Plus, chestnuts become a food source that deer grow to rely on year after year.

I already have McDonald filbert. Want to get Barcelona, since we have long winters here. Barcelona is European filbert; don't think McDonald is. Will they cross-pollinate anyway?

The pairing of hazelnut tree cultivars are dependent upon when the catkins are available for pollinating the red blossoms, because each cultivar grows these at different times. The Barcelona is paired with Felix.

Will the ennis filbert pollinate the Barcelona filbert?

The Ennis filbert (also known as a European hazelnut) will not reliably pollinate the Barcelona filbert, and vice versa. Here's why:

Key Pollination Info:
Ennis and Barcelona are both poor pollen producers, and they are not cross-compatible with each other due to overlapping incompatibility alleles.

Hazelnuts (Corylus avellana) are self-incompatible and require a compatible different cultivar for successful pollination.

Even though both produce both male and female flowers, they need a third compatible pollinizer that is not genetically similar.

Are the suckers the same variety as the main tree? In other words are Barcelona and Casina hazelnut trees cloned?

They are not cloned but they are grafted so the suckers need to be removed.

I have 3 Stark Bro hazel nuts that are 30 years old,  The are about 25' tall and 20 wide. We are in AL zone 7B. So we get a mix of warm and freezing in the the winter. These trees do not produce hazel nuts. What varieties were you selling 30 years ago? Do they need another pollinator, fertilizer?  Any suggetsions?

Unfortunately we do not have record of what was being sold 30 years ago as we have transitioned to all digital and the paper trail no longer exist.

Why are casina hazel nut trees out of stock? I bought a casina and barcelona years back. Ive grown alot of the barcelona from seed, but the casina hasnt produced nuts to grow more plants

Will this pollinate with a Jefferson Hazelnut?

They should pollinate one another as they are both filberts.

Barcelona
I have only just planted the tree, but I must comment on my surprise when I opened the box. I was expecting the typical skinny little seedling. But no! It was a very thick-trunked 4 1/2 foot tree! It has wonderful roots, too. I am betting it will do quite well. Thank you, Stark Bros.

Beautiful trees
Over the past three years I have planted a hazelnut orchard with 60 trees thus far with Barcelona and Jefferson varieties primarily and four different varieties of cross-pollinators. The Barcelona trees have glorious leaves and are quite robust! I am looking forward to seeing them all mature and become productive.

Beautiful healthy trees
I ordered and planted 20 Barcelona trees in the spring and they are just lovely. Although two didn't make it I am still rating them as five stars because the rest are so healthy. I am a certified Master Gardener and practice good organic tree health: My trees are well-pruned, sprout and weed-free, plenty of compost & mulch around the trees out to the drip line, and test the soil regularly for their need for water.
