How hard is it to harvest filberts with squirrels around??
Judith M on Feb 25, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Here in mid Michigan the second week of August is when the squirrels strip the trees of nuts completely within a week. I have made a new planting and it is working out great. Planted away from other trees so the squirrels can't jump from them to my nut trees. I enclosed the filberts with a grounded 5 foot chicken wire fence with an electric fence wire at the top. Problem solved!
Do i need two different hazelnut shrubs for pollenation?
Kathy M on Apr 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: All four filbert varieties offered by Stark Bros say you should have another variety for best yield. I believe some other varieties may not need a second for pollination.
I already have McDonald filbert. Want to get Barcelona, since we have long winters here. Barcelona is European filbert; don't think McDonald is. Will they cross-pollinate anyway?
Jean H on Mar 18, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I was told that you just need two different kinds in order for them to cross pollinate. Mine are still very young( 2 yrs) and they are doing well but not close to producing yet. I think they should be fine for cross pollination purposes. Good luck!!
How susceptible is this variety to Eastern Filbert Blight?
John F on Mar 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: While the Barcelona variety isn't highly susceptible to Eastern Filbert Blight, if the disease is highly prevalent in the area, then Barcelona may exhibit some susceptibility.

Do filberts emit juglone like walnuts? I have 2 I planted about 20' from some apple trees and need to move quickly if so.
Paul's Eden on Apr 4, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Enter an answer to this question.Per the Morten Arboretum, ???Other trees closely related to black walnut, such as butternut, pecan, shagbark hickory, and English walnut also produce juglone, but at concentrations lower than black walnut. Rarely do these trees affect juglone-sensitive plants.???
What would happened if the tree is not suited for my city zone?
Armen B on Feb 19, 2020
BEST ANSWER: We appreciate you reaching out to us. If you decided to plant outside of the recommended zone, you should be aware that your tree could possibly not get enough chill hours to bear fruit, it could possibly get burned up in the summer months if its too hot and it could be at risk of damage from pest and diseases.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!
best time to plant hazelnut trees ?
remi e on Nov 20, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question. Because weather and soil conditions vary so much from year to year and even within your zone, it's best to think of your planting time as a range of favorable conditions instead of an exact time.

You can plant new plants and trees: 1) when the ground is not frozen, 2) when daytime temperatures are above freezing (32??F) and below 90??F, and 3) when extreme weather (blizzard, hail, torrential rain, etc.) is not in the forecast. Be sure to keep plants watered if you're transplanting in warm and/or dry weather.
Can you cross pollinate with two Barvelonas or do they have to be a different variety?
Thelma L on Apr 27, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You will need a different variety with a similar bloom and shed time, like Casina.

Barcelona Hazelnut
Have purchased FINGERLAKES, CASSINA and ROYAL, but Barcelona is my favorite! Have lost only one of the 8 planted in the last 3 years (unlike Cassina and Fingerlakes) and is flourishing twice as fast as the Royals. Actually produced one nut in the second year. Catkins now abound! Thank you to all the folks with their hands in the dirt at Stark Bros that produce, care for, prune and ship the Highest quality trees I've seen.

Beautiful healthy trees
I ordered and planted 20 Barcelona trees in the spring and they are just lovely. Although two didn't make it I am still rating them as five stars because the rest are so healthy. I am a certified Master Gardener and practice good organic tree health: My trees are well-pruned, sprout and weed-free, plenty of compost & mulch around the trees out to the drip line, and test the soil regularly for their need for water.

Tree arrived healthy. I planted it and it is thriving. It is as if it did not go though any transplant shock at all. I want to buy more varieties from Stark Bros.

Beautiful trees
Over the past three years I have planted a hazelnut orchard with 60 trees thus far with Barcelona and Jefferson varieties primarily and four different varieties of cross-pollinators. The Barcelona trees have glorious leaves and are quite robust! I am looking forward to seeing them all mature and become productive.

Barcelona filbert hazelnut
I was so disappointed in this last batch of trees . The taproot of the hazelnut was cut and there was one small root remaining. No viable roots remained . I don't want to do any more business with stark bros , if this is going to be the quality if trees from here on out.
We lost four of the trees the fist time they were sent to us and then they sent replacements which were just as bad as the first.
I had never had problems before this. In fact I was extremely happy and referred stark bros to many friends. I would be doing them a disservice if I referred stark bros now. I never write bad reviews and I try to make lemonade out if lemons, but if it was a stark Bros tree I couldn't even get lemons .
