Description

Sweet, tangy, and unique!

Native to parts of Siberia, these plants excel in northern gardens. The fruit of honeyberries or sometimes referred to as haskaps have flavor comparable to wild blueberries with a hint of currant and ripens two weeks earlier than strawberries.

Honeyberries can be eaten fresh, but these berries truly shine when made into tasty jam. Plants have small, cream-colored flowers in spring and attractive flat-green leaves through summer. Berry Blue™ Honeyberries ripen late May, early June. These are cold-hardy and perfect for northern climates.

For this specimen to produce, it’ll need a different honeyberry plant that blooms around the same time to pollinate it.

Why did you choose this?

I have 1 honeyberry bush....pretty bush. Getting some others for better pollination.

Wanting to try something different in the garden

I have Honeyberry Plants and wanted to expand

I have had the berry before and I loved them so when I seen them I had to have them.

Can berry blue and happy giant cross pollinate?

Yes they can. As long as the plant is not closely related and they bloom in the same time, they will cross just fine. These two specifically are not even close to related and bloom at virtually the same time so they will work fine. That said, (despite what the description says) these are two of the most tart options. The Blue Moose would be the better option with Happy Giant, just because it has a better flavor and bigger berries.

Does the honeyberry need a trellis for support?

No need for a trellis or other support, it will grow well on its own and eventually form a bush. When the plants arrive, they are in very good shape, with plenty of leaves, but directly from the greenhouse. Make sure you keep them out of direct sunlight for a few weeks, then give them more and more light over the next couple of weeks. Otherwise, they will likely get sunburned (if they do, they will lose their leaves - though they will be fine the second year).

Are there any trees I should not plant honey berry tree near?

We live in a very woody area with lots of trees. No problems. Just make sure you have multiple varieties to pollinate each other

Will honeyberries grow near black walnuts? Or will the black walnut poison them?

I have 10 deferent varieties of honey berries growing in zone 7 full sun early middle and late bloomers test the soil ph levels around the walnut trees blueberries maybe a better in that spot

Do deer like to eat them?

Hi Andrea, Our plants that we ship in a gallon container are strong and healthy, well rooted established plants that ship between 4-18 inches tall. We hope that this information is helpful as your planting success is important to us.

Getting honey berries!
We are happy with this variety, it is giving us a bunch of berries in the 2nd year. They grew better for us when we put irrigation on it and the other 3 varieties of honey berries we bought from Stark Bros. It's thriving now.

we have 3 plants, they are growing great. Make sure you fence them off from the rabbits, otherwise they will chew them to the ground.

Slow but Great
I was one of the 2 stars, but now our honeyberry plants have been in the ground like 6 years and I love them! It is true that they were slow growing for the first 3 years. But now they're doing great and give lots of berries! I like that they do well in shade too. They're yummy! We look forward to them every year and they fruit first which is exciting, about a week or maybe 2 before red currants.

Creeping right along
Slow growers, but absolute champs. They’re in the “creep” portion of the “sleep, creep, leap” plant cycle, but they’re all alive and all have a ton of new growth- even in this heat!!
