Description

A ‘Happy Giant’ strain with excellent flavor.

Easy-care, no pruning ever! Blue Diamond has sweet berries with a bit of tartness are crescent-shaped and pretty in salads, dried for trail mix or made into a uniquely delicious jam or jelly.

Honeyberries ontain very high levels of anthocyanins, which have documented anti-inflammatory benefits. As with all honeyberries, after 10 years of fruiting, cut back the central woody stems to about 1-1/2’ off the ground to rejuvenate the plant. Ripens mid-June to mid-July.

For this specimen to produce, it’ll need a different honeyberry plant that blooms around the same time to pollinate it.

14 Questions
Why did you choose this?

Can't grow Blueberries in my soil.

Purchased as a pollinator

I want to add to the plants that I currently have.

heard about this on youtube, use as un understory.

Can you please provide the chill hours required for each variety? Thank you

We are prudent in suggesting Honeyberries need around 750 to 1,000 hours of chilling hours.

What is the mature size of Blue diamond Honeyberry?

The NEW Blue Diamond Honeyberry is a vigorous grower that will mature to be 5 feet tall and wide.

I have Maxine Opus and Kawai Honeyberries will the blue diamond be pollinated by them?

Unfortunately we have no growing information on those two varieties. The Blue Diamond is an early blooming honeyberry so if you can find out if those two are early then they should be compatible with each other.

I have the Blue Moon and Blue Velvet variety of Honeyberry already. Will either serve this variety as a pollinating partner?

No, they bloom at different times and will not pollinate each other.

I was told to clip the buds that appear this first year to help the roots develop better. Is this true? I have two of your bare root dwarf apple trees.

We recommend pinching the blooms off the first year to allow the plant to grow stronger and bear a better harvest the next year.

I would like to find berries that tolerate some shade. What, if any, meet this need? I think that area I could plant in gets half sun/half shade.

Honeyberry plants thrive in a growing location that receives partial shade to full sun along with currants and gooseberries.

Which of these would be a good pollinator for the popular Aurora variety?

Borealis is the best pollinator we have for Aurora: https://www.starkbros.com/products/berry-plants/honeyberry-plants/borealis-honeyberry

Are any of the Honey Berry plants self Polluting ?

NO they all require another variety for pollination.

Will blue banana and blue diamond honey berries cross pollinate together?

Yes, Blue Banana and Blue Diamond honeyberries will cross-pollinate each other.

I have an Aurora and a Borealis and would like to add the Blue Diamond. Does Blue Diamond have the same bloom time as Borealis and Aurora?

Hi Fred, Unfortunatley no the blue diamond is a early season bloomer and the others are mid season. you will want to choose something like the Berry Blue. Boreal Blizzard or the Boreal Beauty,

Good purchase
The blue diamond honeyberry plant that I ordered in mid April came in good condition along with the other honeyberry plant that I ordered. The plants were packaged well. There was no soil spillage for either of them. The soil in both was moist and had no signs of insects. The leaves were overall green and healthy. Now at the end of July both plants have grown taller and have more leaves and are doing good. I am happy with the purchase and will order again from Starkbros if I see anything else that interests me. Based on my experience with this purchase I recommend them.

Great taste
Bought this 3 years ago and the plant is doing very well. More importantly, the berry is one of the sweetest of the 30 varieties I have. Just have to let it fully ripen. Like all honeyberries it needs 2 to 3 weeks after it turns blue before it is ripe. Excellent flavor and very juicy.

Apparently Well-Suited To Central Alabama (Zone 7B)
This one arrived in the 4" pot - small but with some leaves and I re-potted it to a gallon pot. But... it began growing quickly, and after only a few months is, now nearly as tall as the gallon pot Borealis that arrived at the same time. Both have been growing very well. The only real difference is the Blue Diamond plant stem thickness is about half that of the gallon pot Borealis plant. Neither has suffered any leaf loss or distress despite hot temps and high humidity here in Central Alabama. These two are actually growing better than the Blue Moose and Blue Pam plants I previously purchased two years or so back from Starks. Both of the earlier plants still suffer leaf loss each year during hot summer and during high humidity, and neither has ever bloomed as yet - but they do keep coming back each year. They probably are more sensitive to the heat and humidity of Alabama than Borealis and Blue Diamond. I believe this latest purchase will soon be producing blooms and berries by comparison.

Nice plants and fruit.
Plants showed up sad, but Honeyberries do go into a mid summer dormancy, so that is expected. Now fall weather is here they they are going! Fruit is good, but a bit tart for some palettes. Great for jam, but I recommend Borealis or Aurora for fresh eating.
