Jewel Black Raspberry Plant
Description
Jewel Black Raspberry delivers a flavor experience that’s distinctly its own — richer, deeper, and more complex than red raspberries, with an intense sweetness and earthy depth that makes it a favorite for fresh eating, baking, and preserves. A Bristol x Dundee cross developed and licensed by Cornell University, Jewel is known for its vigorous growth, sturdy upright canes, and reliable early July harvests of large, glossy black fruit. Self-pollinating and cold hardy in Zones 5–8, it’s one of the most rewarding black raspberry varieties you can grow.
A Flavor That Red Raspberries Can’t Match
Black raspberries occupy a unique flavor category — sweeter and more intensely flavored than red, with a rich, almost jammy depth that makes them exceptional in every application. Jewel’s large, firm, glossy black fruit delivers that flavor in abundance, whether you’re eating them fresh by the handful, folding them into pies and cobblers, making black raspberry jam, or freezing them for use all winter. The early July harvest also means you’re picking before the heat of midsummer peaks.
Cornell University Pedigree — Bred for Performance
Jewel was developed as a Bristol x Dundee cross through Cornell University’s breeding program, selected for superior fruit quality, vigorous growth, and reliable productivity. That institutional pedigree means you’re planting a variety that was rigorously evaluated and proven before it ever reached home growers — not a selection chosen for novelty, but for genuine performance season after season.

Important Planting Notes
After planting bare-root canes, prune them back to about 2 inches above the ground. This is a critical step that encourages the roots to send up strong new growth — don’t skip it. New growth will emerge from the ground nearby rather than from the original cane, which is normal raspberry behavior as the root system sends up new shoots.
Note: Do not plant red, gold, or purple raspberries within 75–100 feet of black raspberries, as black raspberries can be more susceptible to viral diseases spread by aphids moving between nearby plants.
