Description

Latham Red Raspberry is a classic summer-bearing variety that’s been earning its place in home gardens for decades — reliable, adaptable, cold hardy to Zone 3, and producing large, firm, sweet berries in mid-July that hold up beautifully during harvest and in the kitchen. Its upright growth habit, wide soil adaptability, and attractive burgundy fall foliage make it as practical and beautiful in the landscape as it is rewarding in the harvest bowl.

Firm Berries That Hold Up at Harvest and Beyond

Latham’s firm texture is one of its most valuable qualities. The large, sweet, mid-July berries are easy to pick without bruising or falling apart — a genuine advantage at harvest time when berry handling matters. That same firmness holds through freezing and canning with excellent results, making Latham a top-performing variety for home preservation as well as fresh eating.

Adapts Well to a Wide Range of Soils

Most raspberry varieties are particular about soil conditions. Latham is notably adaptable — performing reliably across a range of soil types that would limit less flexible varieties. For home growers working with less-than-ideal garden conditions, that adaptability translates directly into more consistent harvests without the need for extensive soil amendment.

Burgundy Fall Foliage — Four-Season Landscape Appeal

Latham adds ornamental value beyond the fruiting season. The upright canes produce attractive burgundy fall foliage that adds warm color to the garden as the season winds down — a quality that makes it genuinely beautiful in the landscape year-round, not just during the July harvest window.

Important Planting Notes

After planting bare-root canes, prune them back to about 2 inches above the ground. This is a critical step that encourages the roots to send up strong new growth — don’t skip it. New growth will emerge from the ground nearby rather than from the original cane, which is normal raspberry behavior as the root system sends up new shoots.

Note: Do not plant red, gold, or purple raspberries within 75–100 feet of black raspberries, as black raspberries can be more susceptible to viral diseases spread by aphids moving between nearby plants.

Why Growers Choose Latham
