Why did you choose this?

Granny Smith apples are my favorite. Apples are a good healthy treat.

Starting an apple orchard.

These are a great tasting apple and not available in tree form around me

We love granny smith apples

My sister's family likes Gala and Granny Smith apples. Can these two be planted together?

Gala and Granny Smith trees can cross-pollinate one another for fruit production. They would be great choices to grow, especially if your family enjoys the apples!

Can this pollinate with a honey crisp? Could the two be grown in a 10 x 10 area?

Yes, they can cross-pollinate one another. The trees can be grown in a 10 x 10 foot area as long as you opt for the dwarf size, but you may need to keep them pruned so that their branches don't crowd one another as they mature.

Your site says Pollinator required for a Granny Smith Apple Tree.

But other sites have contradicting verbiage... For example: Granny Smith apple tree is in flowering group 3. It is self-fertile and does not need a pollination partner, but fruiting will usually be improved if there is a compatible partner of a different variety nearby. ... (Most white-blossom crab-apples will also be good pollinators for this variety).

Does "fruiting improved" mean more apples or larger apples or both?
Thank you,

Hi Michael, Thank you for contact us. Over the years, Stark Bro’s has used many different cultivars on some varieties including the Granny Smith. Not all cultivars are the same; some are self-pollinating and some are not. Because of this, we recommend that the Granny Smith not be depended upon itself. It is essential that ample cross pollination be provided. Not only will cross pollination aide in the production of fruit but the more pollen you have available the bigger your yield and your trees will bear the best quality of fruit.

On dwarf root-stock, are these tip-bearing or spur-bearing?

I just planted the tree last year, so I am unsure. Probably fruit spurring is my guess.

will granny smith apple trees grow in NY state and tolerate low temperature, -20 degrees?

Just came through its first winter, and we had record low air temps of -26F. It came through with flying colors.

Can I plant Macintosh for pollination partner?

Hi Julieann, This is a good question. McIntosh Apples are early-mid season bloomers so they should help cross pollinate a Granny Smith.

What kind of soil is best for these? We have a sandy loam.

We also have this type of soil. It is slowly growing, but not as robust as my others. You will have to water more and use the Stark tree fertilizer. But stop feeding after July 1st.

What is the difference between the Supreme dwarf EZ start, and EZ start Dwarf Granny Smith Apple being sold here?

The size in which they ship. A regular EZ start ships 1.5-3 feet tall and a Supreme will ship 3-4 feet tall.

How long before they bear fruit ?

We appreciate you reaching out to us. You can find the years-to-bear information in the Characteristics section, near the top of the page, underneath the description. This tree takes 2-4 years to bear.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!

I want to plant two Granny Smith trees for canning/freezing. Can I plant a Pink Lady to cross pollinate the Granny Smith?

Yes, you can. They are both in the same bloom-time group.

Granny Smith satisfied customer
The apple tree is doing very well, it has leafed out beautifully and I am very happy. In a few years Amarillo, TX will have one less buyer of Granny Smith apples. I soaked the roots before I planted it and it is very happy.
