Recommended Spacing

We recommend spacing these trees 12 - 15' apart to ensure room for growth.

This variety is self pollinating.

In many cases, you may still want to plant pollinating partners to increase the size of your crops, but with self-pollinating varieties doing so is optional. You'll get fruit with only one plant!

To conserve space and still have an apple tree. Even though this is a semi-dwarf I am planning on using it to help shade an outside sitting area.
Robin L on Feb 21, 2019
I like the idea of having two varieties of apple on one tree. I don't have a lot of space to plant, so this is ideal. Also, the fact that the two are on one tree means they pollinate each other, making it even more convenient. There should be more double grafted trees like this for convenience, imo.

BEST ANSWER: Both the Golden Delicious and Red Delicious varieties on this tree favor a range between 800-1500 chill hours.
I live in middle Tennessee (zone 7a). I am building a house and the grounds (10 acres) will have to be reshaped when I am done. I don't want to plant fruit trees now (late October). Is Spring as good as Fall to plant or should I wait until next fall? I want to plant a variety of fruit trees. Thanks Blake Z.

Blake Z.
blake z on Oct 24, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I planted this apple tree in the spring two years ago. The trees did fine the first year and came back really well the next year. Unfortunately it was so wet in Michigan this year that I had a mold or fungus problem and all of the leaves turned black at the end of August. But yes you can do it in the spring.
we live on very sandy ground, will this tree work out ok on sandy ground?
Kristina B on Oct 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: We live on very sandy ground, too. When planting, I mixed in lots of compost into the soil and hole and keep it properly fertilized. After 2 1/2 years, it's still growing happily.
I live in upstate NY when is a good time to plant this double delicious apple tree? They are going to be a birthday gift for my husband since buying our first home it is something he has always wanted
M V on Sep 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I'm on my second year with this tree and it is growing great. We have heavy clay here in Colorado, so I had to dig a 4x4x2 hole and mix some of the clay with sand and tree and shrub soil. I planted on a slight slope and elevated the root ball in the hole for drainage. I'm hoping it will blossom next year.

What time of the year can I plant an apple tree?
Olga O on Nov 3, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question. Because weather and soil conditions vary so much from year to year and even within your zone, it's best to think of your planting time as a range of favorable conditions instead of an exact time.

You can plant new plants and trees: 1) when the ground is not frozen, 2) when daytime temperatures are above freezing (32ºF) and below 90ºF, and 3) when extreme weather (blizzard, hail, torrential rain, etc.) is not in the forecast. Be sure to keep plants watered if you're transplanting in warm and/or dry weather.
I only have a 20 by 40 vegetable garden, can I still have an apple tree in this small space?
Olga O on Nov 3, 2019
BEST ANSWER: A dwarf tree would probably fit best because it will mature to be 8-10 feet tall and wide. If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!
How long will I have to wait to get apples?
Olga O on Nov 3, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The Stark Double Delicious Apple will bear fruit in approximately 2-5 years. If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!
can you grow these trees in a large 20 gallon pot?
steve w on Jul 18, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Sure, many people do. Just make sure it's compatible with your zone and move it to an unheated garage or shed for the winter. Loosely wrap it in an old tarp or blanket and gradually move it back outdoors when the temps get into the upper 50s.
Is this a good tree for espalier?
Jan W on Apr 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This tree looks pretty amazing as an espaliered specimen; yellow apples on one side, red on the other. Quite a conversation piece. If you're interested, we have a good article on the subject here: //
Do self pollinating apple trees pollinate non self pollinating trees?
JWilder on Mar 28, 2018
BEST ANSWER: They can, depending upon the variety. If the bloom times are similar, they will cross-pollinate and produce more/larger fruit on both trees.
Is it possible to prune these two-in-one fruit trees to make them very compact?
Dharma on Feb 8, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you can prune them to virtually any size less than its mature height/width that you want.
Will this work together in Ct along with my existing Liberty tree I purchased last yr from you? My Liberty made no fruit this yr as I only have the one tree. I do have 3 existing VERY OLD Delicious trees, but still no fruit on my Liberty. Thanks for the advice.
Fred Y on Sep 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Liberty takes 2-5 years to bear fruit, so a little patience is necessary. :-) Liberty also blooms too early for either Red or Golden Delicious, and your old Delicious trees will not pollinate these; you will need a different early-blooming variety to pollinate Liberty, like Freedom or Starkspur UltraMac.
Can this tree be used as a pollinator for Honey Crisp?
Barry M on Jul 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question. Because the Stark® Double Delicious tree is part Golden Delicious, it will serve as the perfect pollinator for Honeycrisp™.

fantastic tree
I planted this tree 1 year ago, knowing I wouldn't get apples for 2-5. it was a beautiful bare root tree in great shape. it took to it's new home beautifully last year and had no problems.

this year, I was excited to see flowers, and surprised to find fruit already on the free. I removed 51 fruit (yes I counted), leaving about 20 fruit on the free. I removed that much fruit because the tree is still so young and I was afraid the weight of that much fruit would break the young branches. this tree has out performed my expectations, and I've been telling everyone I know how pleased I am with stark bros.

Double Delicious Apple Tree (Annie)
My little Annie has only been in the ground for a little over a year. She weathered the winter perfectly and is in full spring growth mode at the moment. I was completely satisfied and happy with the shipment when the tree arrived and had her spot in the yard all picked out. So far the tree is thriving and I can't wait for the next several years to pass so we can enjoy the gorgeous fruit we are anticipating. Stark does an amazing job with packaging the trees for shipment and the instructions included are a great help. I've also enjoyed the online help and instruction available for this tree and other nursery items.

I also ordered a Double Delicious Apple for my boss who lives closer to Houston, TX. Her mother passed away last year so I sent her this tree to plant as a memorial to her mom. She loves and pampers her tree and is so proud it is growing so nicely.

Thank you Stark for making growing things enjoyable and sharing your knowledge.

Not the Stark Bros I once knew!
I got this scrawny whip with a little bud coming off it that was the second variety. This year I had to prune the main part a lot just so that small limb could catch up. Maybe in a few years, I will be able to call it a tree. The tree that it replaced was so much nicer than this twig.

Getting Fruit Already?!
We purchased and planted this tree last summer in late June. A few weeks after planting, it got several flowers, but they did not produce fruit. This summer, it had about 15 blooms. Six of them started to turn into apples. A couple of them fell off, but there are still 3 that are developing nicely! I'm so pleased that it is producing fruit after only 1 year of planting! It has almost doubled in size! The foliage is thick and lush. We are so pleased with this tree and would recommend it to others.

incredible tree
I planted a 2-foot tree last May. A year later, we got a few apples although the tree is very young. At least six tiny fruits that are growing. I expected the tree to bear fruit on the 3rd year. Nice surprise!

My tree arrived healthy and I loved on it all last year. This spring it is happy and leafy. I go occasionally talk to it and muss its leaves! I was planning some elaborate espalier stuff and life just kinda doesnt go that way, but I was confident in my tree purchase because it was a Stark. As a kid when we drove by the Stark orchards I was mesmerized. The rows of beautiful trees and the big white barn with a huge bear saying "Stark trees bear fruit" was a promise that stuck in my head. I am glad to have bought my apple and peach trees and am sure they will deliver the fruit, whether I am able to work in the espalier or not! The reputation you have protected is important to me.
