Wolf River Apple Tree
Description
Wolf River is the apple Walt Disney never forgot. Growing up on his family farm in Marceline, Missouri, Disney remembered this variety specifically — he once said, “There was this one kind called Wolf River. Wolf River apples were tremendous in size. People came from miles around to see ours.” His mother Flora could make an entire deep-dish pie from just one apple. Originating from Wolf River, Wisconsin around 1870, this Wisconsin heirloom produces fruit that can weigh up to a pound each — among the largest apples in existence — with tart, tender flesh ideal for baking and an American history unlike any other variety.
The Apple That Inspired a Legend
Walt Disney spent his most formative years in Marceline — he later wrote, “More things of importance happened to me in Marceline than have happened since.” The Wolf River apples his mother grew on that farm were part of that world, and Flora Disney’s deep-dish Wolf River apple pie was Walt’s all-time favorite dessert. You can find her original recipe in our Growing Guide — and the same variety she grew is available to plant in your own backyard today.
Enormous Fruit, Outstanding for Baking
Wolf River’s fruit is legendary for its size — individual apples can weigh up to a pound, and a single large specimen can fill an entire pie. The tart, tender flesh holds its shape beautifully under heat and requires very little added sugar, making it one of the finest baking apples available. It ripens in late September and is excellent for pies, applesauce, and cooked desserts of every kind.
