Would the Starking Hardy Giant Antique Sweet Cherry be a good pollinator for the Hedelfingen? I'm in zone 5b, so both are zoned correctly

Unfortunately, Starking Hardy Giant Antique Sweet Cherry blooms far too early for it to pollinate the late-season Hedelfingen cherry. Please contact Customer Support at 800.325.4180. We would be happy to discuss pollination options and help you find the right tree if one of our recommended polliinators doesn't work for you.

Japanese beatle resistant cherry tree
My areas get beatle I festatio s- what kind resists them?

I am sorry there are no cherry trees resistant to beetles. There are way to protect them however. Removing unhealthy or prematurely ripened fruit from your tree and the ground in spring. Additionally, try applying a product that contains neem oil on your fruit tree in late summer or fall. This organic option both kills and repels beetles when it's applied.

Grow in cold weather?

Yes these will survive through cold winters. However all the sweat cherry trees want an early spring, and don't like late frosts. I'm near the Canadian border and haven't had consistent crops. However the sour pie cherry verities do very well.

Is it possible for two like variety of cherry trees to bear fruit?

Thank you for your question. Common rule of cherry tree pollination is any sweet cherry will pollinate another sweet cherry. Except when it comes to the Bing, there are three varieties that will not cross-pollinate with it and it is the Emperor Francis, Lambert, or Napoleon/Royal Ann. Other than those you will be fine to choose nay other sweet variety for pollination.

Proper planting time?

We appreciate you reaching out to us. Because weather and soil conditions vary so much from year to year and even within your zone, it's best to think of your planting time as a range of favorable conditions instead of an exact time.

You can plant new plants and trees:
1) when the ground is not frozen.
2) when daytime temperatures are above freezing (32ºF) and below 90ºF.
3) when extreme weather (blizzard, hail, torrential rain, etc.) is not in the forecast. Be sure to keep plants watered if you're transplanting in warm and/or dry weather.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!

Weird Healthy Tree With A Strange Name Growing In Zone 7B
This has been a weird cherry tree from the start in 2018. It was a replacement for a different Stark cherry tree that never grew after arrival. This tree began growing all of its branches, large long branches, at 90 degrees from a crooked trunk that grew thicker a foot up from the soil level than it was nearer the soil. I then saw a sprig on the trunk come up straight near the roots - which also put out roots of its own. I separated that sprig from the main plant trunk using a sharp knife and potted it this spring. Also planting the original tree in the ground this year from the pot I have had it in now for years. I cut all but one of the heavy 90 degree limbs off but one - as the central leader had died long back. I then tied that limb up straight and tied the entire tree to a strong cedar stake to straighten it out. This summer it has grown well and is appearing more like a normal cherry tree. I was hesitant about just what the sprig was from it, but the sprig has grown very well this summer - now about three feet tall. The leaves are identical to the original plant, and I have already been having to trim off 90 degree limbs from the new plant. Also I have it staked and tied in order to keep the growth upright and straight - so I know it is another Hedelfingen like the original plant I received. As such, I know some people like to train some fruit trees to grow 90 degree limbs along fences and keep the height low - the Hedelfingen should be ideal for this. I just want mine to grow straight and tall - also happy I now have two instead of one. I just wonder how both are going to look after more time. Strange, but both are healthy - and the sprig appears to be growing faster than the original tree has grown.

Another fruit tree failure
We’ve tried several fruit trees from Stark Brothers and only 2 are still alive but they are not actually growing. They are still just a stick with a few leaves. We’re going to try trees from our local nursery and see if they grow any better. I was really excited about the varieties we had to choose from. Just wish we had better luck.
