About the Ponkan Mandarin Tree

A popular mandarin orange for any garden! The Ponkan is one of the most sought-after mandarin fruit trees. Gardeners appreciate this mandarin for its attractive dark leaves, fragrant blooms, and delicious citrus. This upright tree is a beautiful addition to any landscape and does well in containers.

Ponkan Mandarin oranges are medium-sized and oblong in shape. They are prized for their rich, sweet flavor and the fruit is easy to peel, making it ideal for snacking. Enjoy fresh mandarins straight from the tree, or use them in a variety of recipes, from salads and desserts to marinades and baked goods. It’s the healthy snack kids love!

How to Grow Ponkan Mandarin Trees

Mandarin orange trees are easy to grow! In terms of pest control, mandarin orange trees are relatively hardy and can tolerate a range of insect and disease pressures. When planting a mandarin orange tree, choose a location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight each day and has well-draining soil.

The Ponkan Mandarin orange is cold hardy down to low temperatures of about 30 degrees, so they are more suitable for cooler locations than some other sensitive citrus varieties. It can be grown as a potted patio plant, just bring it indoors during the cold months and place it near a sunny window. For best results, apply regular applications of fertilizer, particularly during the growing season. Use a citrus-specific fertilizer and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application rates.

Plant the Ponkan Mandarin tree to enjoy a bountiful harvest of homegrown citrus the whole family will enjoy!

Why did you choose this?

I needed to send an anniversary gift to my parents, and their decades-old lemon tree had died over the winter.

I want beautiful, easy to grow, easy to care for container fruit trees for my back deck. Hoping this tree is a good addition and produces some good fruit, as well!

Can grow indoors

I'm new to citrus growing.  Are these citrus trees (cara cara, clementine, golden nugget, and ponkan) grafted or grown on their own roots?  I'm trying to figure out how low to prune once I repot them to remove any possible root suckers.  There are a few bulges low on the trunks (a few trees have multiple bulges about 2" apart, 6-10" above the soil surface with additional branching staring) that could be graft unions, but I'm not sure if those are just growing over previously pruned sections since I've also read citrus should be pruned flush to the trunk and allowed to self-seal as the tree grows.

All variaties are grafted besides the Ponkan, I do recommend sending in some photos if you are unsure about something and a representative will be happy to assist you. Photos can be emailed to info@starkbros.com

Is this on a dwarf rootstock?

No it is not a dwarf tree it matures 12-14 feet.

What is the growing season?

The growing season depends on your location, and weather.

How big do these trees grow?

When your tree matures, it will be approximately 12 - 14' tall x 8 - 10' wide.

How big are these trees when they are shipped out?

2-3 feet at shipping.

Why are citrus trees unable to be shipped to California ???

Unfortunately this happens to be a product that has state or county agricultural regulations, which prohibit shipment. Sometimes there are local/regional quarantines put in place to halt the spread of certain plant diseases, which does not happen often. While these regulations may change in the near future, we apologize that we cannot ship this item to you at the present time.

Beautiful Tree
It arrived in beautiful shape. About 3' tall and several branches. 2+ months later, it has grown about a foot and bushed out beautifully. I know it will take a while to fruit but that is half the fun of growing tropical fruit in the north. Anxious to see how it does in a heated greenhouse over the winter.
