Hosui Asian Pear Tree
Description
About the Hosui Asian Pear Tree
The Hosui Asian Pear Tree is one of the most popular Asian pear varieties grown in the U.S., known for its bold, snappy flavor and refreshing crunch. Introduced from Japan in the 1970s, Hosui produces medium to large fruit with attractive golden-russet skin and exceptionally juicy flesh.
Unlike traditional European pears, Asian pears (Pyrus pyrifolia) are crisp like an apple but sweet and aromatic like a pear. Hosui stands out for its slightly higher acid content, giving it a balanced sweet-tangy flavor that many gardeners prefer. The fruit is best enjoyed fresh off the tree but also holds up beautifully in pies and other desserts.
Ripening in late August (sometimes as early as July in warmer regions), Hosui delivers dependable late-summer harvests and performs well in areas with 450–700 chill hours. With better resistance to fire blight than many European pears. It is also heat-tolerant, making it a versatile option for many growing climates.
How to Grow Hosui Asian Pear Trees
Hosui is moderately vigorous with a slightly spreading growth habit and adapts well to home orchards in USDA Zones 5–9. It performs best in full sun with well-drained soil and good airflow.
While self-pollinating, Hosui will produce larger crops when planted near another compatible Asian pear, such as New Century (see recommended pollinators below).
With its crisp texture, golden-bronze skin, and lively flavor, the Hosui Asian Pear Tree is an excellent choice for gardeners who want a unique, refreshing fruit that bridges the best qualities of apples and pears.
