Sunrise Pear Tree
Description
About the Sunrise Pear Tree
The Sunrise Pear Tree is an early-ripening European pear bred specifically for improved disease resistance and exceptional fruit quality. Developed and released by the USDA Agricultural Research Service in 2006, Sunrise was selected for its strong resistance to fire blight — one of the most common challenges in pear growing — along with moderate resistance to pear scab. This thoughtful breeding makes it a dependable choice for home gardeners seeking a more resilient pear tree.
The fruit is medium-sized and bright yellow, often brushed with a soft red blush and minimal russeting. Inside, the flesh is white, fine-textured, juicy, and aromatic with a balanced sweetness. Sunrise ripens in early August, typically several weeks before Bartlett, extending the pear harvest season. The fruit stores well for 2–3 months under proper refrigeration, maintaining its quality long after picking.
How to Grow the Sunrise Pear Tree
Sunrise performs best in full sun and well-drained soil. The tree has a moderately vigorous, upright-spreading habit and benefits from annual pruning to promote airflow and consistent fruiting. Like most European pear trees, it requires cross-pollination for optimal production.
With its early harvest window, excellent storage life, and breeding focused on disease resistance, the Sunrise Pear Tree is a reliable and rewarding addition to the home orchard.
