Description

An easy to grow American Persimmon with big flavor!

I 94 American Persimmon is also known as Claypool 1-94 or Valeen Beauty. This Large fruit has clear flesh with excellent flavor. Claypool I-94 is large, early, and delicious. It differs from Early Golden by being slightly larger, more oblate and brighter orange color. Another interesting trait of Claypool I-94 is its very large and glossy leaves, making it a beautiful tree year-round.

Persimmons look and taste like the Fall season. This American Persimmon is non-astringent, meaning they are sweeter and ripe, ready to be eaten immediately after picking. They can be roasted, dried, canned, and baked. Pairing well with warm spices, persimmon fruits are a staple for Fall baking. This unique fruit is a terrific addition to a healthy diet, full of vitamins A & C, nutrients, antioxidants, and fiber.

Growing American Persimmons

The American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana), also known as the common persimmon, is native from Florida to Connecticut, west to Iowa and south to Texas. Expect almost no pest or disease problems!

Persimmon trees can tolerate some shade but require sun for ripening fruit. Persimmons are easy-to-grow and tolerate winter temperatures to minus 25 degrees F. They are cold-hardy, tolerating winter temperatures to minus 25 degrees F. Once established, they can withstand considerable drought.

Almost all American persimmon trees require a pollinator to bear fruit. See pollinator recommendations and other characteristics below.

1-94 American Persimmons ripen in October to November. Come harvest in the fall, you’ll easily spot the bright orange fruit. The fruit softens and sweetens once they experience frost.

Love to go pick them with my dad when I was little

non-astringent and can survive in cold zone.

Looking for a cold hardy persimmon

Have any customers found the american persimmon cultivars actually to be self-fruitful? I have a 12’ tall yates persimmon that has flowered profusely for well over 5 years now and produced just two fruits - which wildlife got before they ripened. I recently planted a second american persimmon variety but am thinking that was a mistake, and I should have bought a male cultivar. These grow to large trees and few people in suburban USA have room for more than a few of these. There are no wild persimmon growing anywhere near my NW Chicago burbs location.

I've had the same problem with my Yates American Persimmon. It's a beautiful tree, great shape and has bloomed now for over 3 seasons but no fruit. The blooms seem very small. I'm afraid that it's not actually a Yates and is a male variety of another American Persimmon. I've been trying to look up photos of the blooms of the Yates but haven't had much luck in my searching. I just find photos of the fruits and other variety's blooms.

Is this an astringent variety?

I re-read it, it states non-astringent :)

The tree is very slow adapting, waiting until spring to see if it survives.
