Description

Multi Blue Clematis is one of the most visually impressive clematis varieties available — a double-flowering Dutch selection from 1983 that produces stunning 4–5 inch blossoms with multiple layers of rich purple-blue petals that create a depth and fullness that single-flower clematis simply can’t match. Vigorous vines bloom in June, then reliably repeat-bloom in September, giving the garden two full flushes of extraordinary color per season. Cold hardy to Zone 3, heat tolerant, deer resistant, and thriving on a trellis, fence, or arbor in Zones 3–9.

Double Flowers — 4–5 Inches of Layered Purple-Blue

The double-flower form is what sets Multi Blue apart from the dozens of clematis varieties available. Where single-bloom varieties produce one layer of petals, Multi Blue builds its flowers in multiple layers — creating a lush, full blossom with the kind of visual presence that stops people in their tracks. The rich purple-blue color is as vivid and saturated as any clematis produces, and the large 4–5 inch flowers are genuinely impressive at full bloom in June and again in September.

Two Full Flushes Per Season — June and September

Multi Blue’s repeat-blooming habit is one of its most practical seasonal advantages. The first flush arrives in late spring to early summer on old wood, delivering the primary bloom display. The second flush follows in late summer into fall on new wood — reliably returning for a second full show of purple-blue double flowers at the time of year when most other flowering vines have finished. Two complete bloom cycles from a single planting, season after season.

Pruning Type 2 — How to Care for Multi Blue

Multi Blue is a Type 2 pruning clematis. In early spring, prune only to remove dead tissue above the current season’s swelling buds — do not cut back hard. After pruning, gently and loosely tie all remaining growth to the trellis or support to encourage even coverage.
