Questions & Answers
Of course, much depends on what kind of soil it's planted in, and other factors like sun, rainfall, nutrients and drainage, but this should be full size within 4-5 years. When your plant matures, it will be approximately 4 - 6' tall x 4 - 5' wide.
Ours did for one season. Once we transplanted it the second year, it grew rapidly. It’s enormous in 2 years!
It is not resistant but Deer do not destroy or severely damage the plant. It is a perennial flowering shrub with blooms weeping from the upright center. The weigela is a member of the honeysuckle family.
I planted this in DE. Our temps get down to the teens sometimes. Since I bought this I planted it, let it grow in one spot and decided the next year that it wouldn't work there if it got too big. This spring I relocated it and we had a really long colder Spring until recently. Despite being planted twice in 2 years its going gangbusters. It really likes where I moved it to. So I think its very hardy.
The best times for moving plants are when they are dormant. Avoid transplanting during the growing season (summer), which will stress the plant unnecessarily. The middle of winter may also be a problematic time for transplanting, as the soil may be tough to dig in. Yes, mine was also small starting out two years ago. Last year it was just leaves and not very big, but this year is a tremendous difference! It's already two feet in diameter all around with gorgeous pink blossoms! I can't wait to see it continue growing!
We lost a potted plant inside because it got too cold. I have one planted outside this summer and hope it makes it thru this winter. We are in 7b also.
I would not recommend planting a variegated weigela in a hanging pot. The plant's mature size is 4-6 feet tall and around 5 feet wide. Given what it needs, it does grow into a beautiful fountain-shaped shrub naturally. But it needs much more space than a hanging pot will give it. And it needs to send its roots down into the soil.
Can't say for sure but we have never had a problem and we definitely have deer on our property.
Yes. Deer have left my bush alone. It is planted near the foundation of our home - out in the country. Deer are frequently on our lawn- no dogs! Once established this bush is easy to maintain and enjoy the flowers and variegated foliage.
