Why did you choose this?

Native

I like the fragrance

I love it

Wanted native Wisteria for a trellis tunnel and for a property boundary fence.

Is it highly fragrant?

They are not as highly fragrant as other types of wisteria. Mine have a light, pleasant scent.

Is this the American Wisteria?

Hi Kathleen, This is indeed a non-invasive American wisteria. If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!

What size and shape container should I use if I want to train this to fill a 10x10 trellis?

This variety is not as vigorous as other wisterias, so it will work in a container. A 20-gallon container will give the roots room to grow, but it is a vine that is about 4' wide and eventually 30' tall , and you will need to almost espalier it in order for it to grow in a square configuration.

Does wisteria frutescens have nectar or pollen for honeybees?

Yes I have seen many honey and bumble bees around my wisteria plants.

How do you grow / maintain Wisteria Falls as a "tree" or standard?

Tree Wisterias require light but frequent pruning of the long twining branches produced in summer. They also need one hard pruning in late summer or early fall - a few weeks before your first frost date. Cut the current season's growth back to just 5 to 6 large buds (leaving stubs about 6 inches long) and remove poorly placed branches entirely. This will control growth and encourage some of the leaf buds to change into flower buds.

I have ordered this and am awaiting delivery. Unfortunately, I have now read that these blooms smell terribly like cat pee. Can anyone verify this?

I have trouble smelling anything and what got me to buy this item was when I walked by it at the Starks Garden Center I could smell the sweet fragrance from the walkway. Smells great and has very pretty flowers too.

What size will the plant be when I receive it?

The quart pot is goign to ship 6-10 inches

Are these seeds poisonous for dogs? And do the seeds burst open in spring?

Yes the seeds are poisonous to dogs and cats and they burst open in the spring.

Are these native plants? If not, are they invasive?

Amethyst Falls is an American wisteria (Wisteria frutescens) – it is not known to be invasive, but always check with your local cooperative extension if you're concerned about invasive species specific to your area.

I ordered Amethyst Falls to grow on a trellis and throw shade on my front door, which is on the SW corner of my house and the hardware gets very hot. I'm having a metal fabricator make the trellis, but now wonder if a metal trellis will be too hot for the vine? I don't want wood because it will look shabby after a few seasons in Iowa.

Fast grower
I purchased this as a gift for my mother and it was only about four inches tall when it arrived in the mail. After 7 months it is now over six feet tall. Looking forward to seeing it flower next season.

Arrived in good shape. They struggled for a few weeks while
getting acclimated to the heat. Now they are growing great
and looking very healthy.

beautiful vine
We planted one of these vines last year and it is gorgeous. We have added another one to the other side of the arbor this year. While the blooms are not as large as the oriental wisteria that you see, it is still lovely and not nearly as aggressive or invasive. Plus it has the advantage of being a native North American species.

beautiful blooms
This is the second year that I have had this Wisteria Falls planted, the blooms are beautiful and both plants are doing great. I have them planted on each side of a trellis and can't wait for them to meet in the middle, I know it is going to be breath taking.

Beautiful springtime vine!
Zone 7 Winter-hardy, this wisteria is native to North America, and thus non-invasive, but provides beautiful springtime purple blossoms. I am thoroughly enjoying this plant.

Slow but there
I was expecting a lot more growth in the first year. We bought two plants, but neither got more than one foot high, and we were hoping to train it along our backyard fence. We thought they were dead, but they both popped up this year and have been climbing on the fence somewhat. Fingers crossed!

It dead
Plant was not secured in packaging and arrived wilted and dried out since the potting soil had emptied into the box. Attempts to revive it have not been successful. It sprouted one new leaf that has since died. Would not buy again.

Disappeared into the yard never to be seen again. Husband claims he planted it, maybe he didn't? Seems unfair to rate this low if there was foul play. For now I say beware.
