Whiddon Pecan Tree
Description
Whiddon is a modern pecan bred from the best — a Pawnee × Desirable cross from the University of Georgia Pecan Breeding Program that combines the early bearing and quality of Pawnee with the large nut size and productivity of Desirable. The result is a large, beautifully colored, oblong pecan averaging about 40 per pound with excellent color and no speckling, superior scab resistance that performs well even in hot and humid climates, and thick shells that protect against bird damage. An early producer and a productive, reliable performer in Zones 6–9. Patent protected. Type I pollinator.
Pawnee × Desirable — The Best of Both Parents
Whiddon’s parentage explains its quality. Pawnee contributes early bearing, high quality kernels, and cold tolerance; Desirable contributes large nut size, excellent flavor, and proven productivity. The combination produces large, uniformly colored, oblong nuts with firm, crisp kernels that are excellent for fresh eating, baking, and desserts. The thick shells are a practical bonus — providing meaningful protection against birds that can devastate thin-shelled varieties at harvest.
Superior Scab Resistance — Especially in Hot, Humid Climates
Scab is the most damaging pecan disease, and it’s most severe in the hot, humid conditions of the Southeast where many pecan growers operate. Whiddon’s superior scab resistance performs reliably even in these demanding conditions — a meaningful practical advantage over more susceptible varieties that require intensive spray programs to produce clean fruit in humid climates.
Early Producer With Heavy Crops
Whiddon is an early bearer that begins producing within 5–7 years and then delivers productive, heavy crops reliably once established. Heavy crop years may benefit from thinning to maintain consistent nut size and quality across the harvest.
