Description
About the Famosa Pistachio Tree
A male pollinating partner for increased yields! The Famosa pistachio tree is a cultivar of Pistacia vera, the species of plant that produces pistachio nuts. It is a deciduous tree that is native to the Middle East and is grown for its edible nuts, which are encased in a hard shell. The Famosa pistachio tree is known for its compatibility with Kerman, a popular female pistachio.
Pistachio nuts are a popular snack food and are used in a variety of culinary applications, including baking, cooking, and as a garnish. They are high in protein, fiber, and various vitamins and minerals, making them a healthy choice for snacking.
Growing the Famosa Pistachio Tree
The Famosa pistachio tree can grow up to 20 feet tall and has a spreading canopy that can reach up to 35 feet wide. It has compound leaves that are composed of several small leaflets and are a bright, glossy green color. The male trees produce small, yellow flowers that are used to pollinate the female trees, which produce the green pistachio nuts.
Male pistachio trees are typically smaller and more slender than female trees and do not produce fruit. Pistachio trees require well-draining soil and a sunny location to thrive. They are drought-tolerant and can survive in hot, dry climates, but they do require regular watering during the growing season.
More about Pollination for Pistachio Trees
Pistachios are dioecious, which means that trees are either male or female. The female plants produce the seeds, or nuts, but they require timely pollination from the male trees. Pistachios rely on wind for pollination, making it important for the flowering times to overlap.
The Kerman (female) variety has been the industry standard in California for over 50 years. Famoso is being released to provide better pollination for Kerman. Famoso is a male pistachio, that produces good quantities of viable pollen and produces flowers at a younger tree age than Peters, and more closely matches the flowering dates of Kerman than does Peters, especially in seasons where Kerman has an extended bloom.
May be covered by USPP #28,994 or other patents.

Questions & Answers
Hi Eric it looks like these are budded and the rootstock used is UCB1 I hope this information is helpful.
Possibly however these trees get very large so potting them may not be ideal. When your tree matures, it will be approximately 20 - 30' tall x 25 - 35' wide.
Yes they can have exfoliating bark.
These are male trees, we are currently working on having the female pollinating partner but no ETA on those yet.

The Famosa pistachio tree is known for it’s compatibility with Kerman, a popular female pistachio.
That is correct; the Famosa is male. We had purchased trees locally, but there was some uncertainty about the gender markings, plus all but one of them died. The Famosa and a few replacement females I also purchased have been in the ground since Fall and, though they aren't budding out yet, appear to be thriving!
As described in the description on the product page this is a male tree. The male trees produce small, yellow flowers that are used to pollinate the female trees, which produce the green pistachio nuts.
Male pistachio trees are typically smaller and more slender than female trees and do not produce fruit.

Cross-pollination by a different variety is key to its growing and bearing success. Plant a pollinator within 100' for best pollination. Pistachios are dioecious, which means that trees are either male or female. The female plants produce the seeds, or nuts, but they require timely pollination from the male trees. Pistachios rely on wind for pollination, making it important for the flowering times to overlap.

Unfortunatley Famoso is a male pistachio, that produces good quantities of viable pollen and produces flowers at a younger tree age IF you want a female tree you would need to cancel one of the Famosa and order a pollinator female tree such as The Kerman https://www.starkbros.com/products/nut-trees/pistachio-trees/kerman-pistachio
I already have a mature pistachio tree. I am not sure if it is male or female. It seems to try to make nuts but then does not. So I have ordered two variety of trees that are compatible with each…
I'm hoping for some nuts.
