Protect your trees through winter. Winterizing is an easy way to help prevent winter injury to young trees. This money-saving kit makes the job even easier by providing the basics you need. We’ve included a Stark® Tree Guard that helps reduce splits and cracks in the tree’s trunk caused by winter sun. You’ll get natural pest prevention in the form of a horticultural dormant oil spray concentrate (derived from mineral oil), which helps control overwintering pests and their eggs. You’ll also receive a durable pair of bypass pruners with a 3/4-inch cutting capacity so you can provide low-stress pruning while the tree is dormant. Mulch is not included, but still highly recommended for winter protection. Tree available separately.

  • 20” Stark® Tree Guard for young trees
  • 16-oz. Bonide® All Seasons® Horticultural & Dormant Spray Oil concentrate
  • Bypass pruner (3/4-inch cutting capacity)

Kit accommodates winterization of 1 young fruit tree for approximately 2 to 3 years

What is the purpose of winter success oil? Is it for bugs or a fertilizer? These trees are in pots, spend the summer in Massachusetts, and in the house for the winter. Any suggestions? They have green fruit on them planted two years ago June 2014

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your inquiry. The dormant oil is used for the control of insects and pests, rather than diseases or as a fertilizer. Indoor plants are susceptible to scale and other insects, just as outdoor plants are. If you're bringing a potted tree or plant indoors in the fall, you never know what might be "hitching a ride." It's a good precautionary measure.
