Description

Caroline Red Raspberry earns its reputation on flavor first. Known for producing large, firm berries with a rich, mild-tart taste that stands out among red raspberry varieties, Caroline is an everbearing variety that delivers two distinct harvests per season — an early summer floricane crop in July and a heavy primocane harvest from September through the first frost. Vigorous, productive, and self-pollinating in Zones 5–8, it’s a top choice for home growers who want outstanding quality across a long season.

Superior Flavor, Two Harvests Per Season

Caroline’s flavor is what sets it apart — a well-balanced mild tartness with genuine depth that makes these raspberries exceptional fresh, frozen, baked, or preserved. The berries are large and firm with good structure that holds up well at harvest and in the kitchen. The dual-season production cycle means you’re picking from the same planting twice — a moderate July crop from floricanes followed by the main event, a heavy September-through-frost primocane harvest that stretches well into autumn.

Vigorous Canes, Reliable Production

Caroline produces strong, upright canes with good vigor that establish quickly and bear fruit in their first or second year. The wide soil pH tolerance (5.8–7.5) makes it adaptable to a broad range of growing conditions, and its self-pollinating nature means you can start with a single planting and enjoy full crops without a second variety.

Why Growers Love Caroline
  • Superior flavor — rich, well-balanced mild-tart taste that outshines many red varieties
  • Two harvests per season — July floricane crop plus heavy September-through-frost primocane harvest
  • Large, firm berries — great structure for fresh eating, freezing, and preserving
  • Vigorous and productive — strong-growing canes with reliable annual yields
  • Wide soil pH tolerance — adaptable to a broad range of garden conditions
  • Self-pollinating — fruit with just one planting
  • Bears fruit in 1–2 years — fast results from a new planting
Important Planting Notes

After planting bare-root canes, prune them back to about 2 inches above the ground. This is a critical step that encourages the roots to send up strong new growth — don’t skip it. New growth will emerge from the ground nearby rather than from the original cane, which is normal raspberry behavior as the root system sends up new shoots.

Note: Do not plant red, gold, or purple raspberries within 75–100 feet of black raspberries, as black raspberries can be more susceptible to viral diseases spread by aphids moving between nearby plants.
