Description

Enjoy velvety, flavorful berries. This highly productive plant yields exceptionally sweet raspberries that melt in your mouth. Disease-resistant to root rot. Cold-hardy and heat-tolerant. Mid- to late-summer bearing. Ripens in late July to early August. Self-pollinating. A licensed variety of Cornell University.

Note: Do not plant Red, Gold or Purple raspberries within 75-100 feet of Black raspberries. Black raspberries may be more susceptible to viral diseases carried by aphids to and from nearby raspberry plants.

After planting, be sure to prune the bare-root canes back to about 2 inches above the ground. (This does not apply to potted raspberry plants.) Do not skip this step! It is a crucial factor in encouraging the roots to send up new growth during the growing season. It is in the nature of raspberry plants to send up new growth as suckers or basal shoots from below the ground. This means the canes that you plant may not be where you find signs of life or new growth. When it’s time to grow, you will see new sprouts emerge from the ground around where you planted the cane, and this growth is coming from the raspberry plant’s root system.

The USDA hardiness zones offer a guide to varieties that will grow well in certain climates. Each zone corresponds to the minimum winter temperatures experienced in a given area. Make sure that your hardiness zone lies within the zone compatibility range of this variety before ordering.

Want to add another variety of raspberries.

Cornell approved

How soon after planting will these raspberry plants have fruit?

I planted spring and I got few fruit that fall. But next year I could get so much!!

Are these Encore raspberries grafted plants?

We appreciate you reaching out to us. No berry plants are not grafted.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!

Does these often spread/mulitply?

Raspberry plants get big, really big, and they spread out. You have to provide them with room to spread a little or they won't thrive.

Are these thornless raspberries?

Yes.

Is this a primocane variety (prune by cutting to the ground every year?). What pruning guideline is best for this variety?

Encore is a late-season floricane. One of our resident experts, Sarah DePass has written an outstanding guide about growing and pruning raspberries, including floricanes. You can read it here: ://www.starkbros.com/growing-guide/how-to-grow/berry-plants/raspberry-plants/pruning

Can you put two of these in a 24" wide pot?

You'll have to sort of overlap and intertwine the roots. But raspberries are highly adaptable plants, I think this would be fine. They multiply pretty quickly so I'd also say that your probably only NEED one in a 24" pot. As the other person commented I've found Heritage to be a more reliable variety.

Do these need staking? Which cold hardy zone 4 varieties support themselves?

This just my second year with these berries. I have not staked them and have had no problem. I am not familiar with other berries, but I live in cold hardiness zone 6a, and these are doing fine.

Hi! I planted this in a pot to get started. I feel like I’m seeing mixed answers regarding cutting back the canes. In a pot should you leave them the height they arrive, cut back to 2”, or make a fresh cut at the top? Thank you for your help, we love StarkBros!

You should cut them back to just a few inches from the ground. You want more energy to be diverted into growing the rhizomes and roots promoting new growth. The original cane will die back the following year.

Do they freeze well?

Yes, they freeze very well as long as they are dry when you put them in the freezer.

Do these have thorns?

Yes. They tend to be more pronounced on the year-old/brown canes than the young ones. Compared to other varieties, though, I don't find they are as pronounced (or bothersome).

Encore beauty
Can't wait to see the fruits of Stark Bros labor and of course mine growing and planting these raspberries. The plants arrived in well planted shape and planting them was fun. Due to the late arrival of winter we enjoyed them green for quite awhile. Looking forward to spring for their rebirth

Happy Plants
Plants are doing great after a few months growing. Plants produced a few berries already, which was unexpected the first year. Every year will hopefully be more bountiful. Very happy with the purchase.
