About Clementine Mandarin Trees

Sweet, seedless and easy to peel, this Mandarin Orange is a favorite among families! This popular citrus variety is commonly found in grocery stores, enjoyed for its sweet and juicy fruits with distinct Mandarin flavor. Easy to eat and easy to grow!

The Mandarin Orange Tree (Citrus reticulata) is renowned for its captivating beauty and deliciously sweet fruit. It has become one of the most popular choices among citrus enthusiasts, thanks to its numerous desirable qualities.

One of the key reasons for its popularity is the irresistible taste of its fruit. The Mandarin Orange is renowned for its delectably sweet flavor, and almost seedless fruit, making it a favorite among children and adults alike. Thin skinned and easy to peal, each juicy segment bursts with distinctively tangy-sweet notes.

Beyond its delectable taste, the Mandarin Orange Tree is an ornamental treasure. With its glossy, evergreen foliage and fragrant blossoms, it adds a touch of elegance to any garden or landscape. When in bloom, the tree becomes a visual spectacle, showcasing a profusion of delicate white flowers that emit a delightful citrus fragrance, attracting bees and butterflies to your garden.

How to Grow a Clementine Mandarin Tree

The Clementine Mandarin Orange (Citrus reticulata ‘Clementine’) Tree thrives in warmer climates and is also compatible with container planting, delighting gardeners everywhere! Simply bring your potted Mandarin tree indoors during the winter months to grow citrus in cooler regions.

Clementine’s do well in sandy soil, but they will adapt to most native soils. Well-draining soil is essential, enriched with organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure to enhance fertility and drainage. Adequate moisture is crucial, with regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

It requires a sunny location, receiving 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily, to ensure robust growth and abundant fruiting. Pruning helps maintain the desired shape, remove dead or crossing branches, and improve airflow.

Applying a balanced citrus fertilizer in early spring and early summer provides the necessary nutrients for vigorous growth and bountiful fruit production.

With these ideal growing conditions, the Clementine Mandarin Orange Tree will flourish, rewarding you with a magnificent display of vibrant foliage, fragrant blossoms, and succulent fruits.

I'm new to citrus growing.  Are these citrus trees (cara cara, clementine, golden nugget, and ponkan) grafted or grown on their own roots?  I'm trying to figure out how low to prune once I repot them to remove any possible root suckers.  There are a few bulges low on the trunks (a few trees have multiple bulges about 2" apart, 6-10" above the soil surface with additional branching staring) that could be graft unions, but I'm not sure if those are just growing over previously pruned sections since I've also read citrus should be pruned flush to the trunk and allowed to self-seal as the tree grows.

All variaties are grafted besides the Ponkan, I do recommend sending in some photos if you are unsure about something and a representative will be happy to assist you. Photos can be emailed to info@starkbros.com

Can the tree be kept small to keep inside?

Yes by pruning them seasonally

I live I zone 6 A so I would be growing it in a container.  It's the end of July, would it be better to wait until spring to purchase?

That will be a personal preference, either time frame is ok for this potted plant.

I live in zone 8a would a greenhouse be ok to put the tree if in pot would would it still get to cold and need to be brought inside?

This tree will not be able to handle temps below 50 degrees. It can be grown in a green house and brought out side during spring and summer.

In the hot weather of San Antonio area of  South Texas, when is the best time to plant Clementines?

We appreciate you reaching out to us. Because weather and soil conditions vary so much from year to year and even within your zone, it's best to think of your planting time as a range of favorable conditions instead of an exact time.

You can plant new plants and trees:
1) when the ground is not frozen.
2) when daytime temperatures are above freezing (32ºF) and below 90ºF.
3) when extreme weather (blizzard, hail, torrential rain, etc.) is not in the forecast. Be sure to keep plants watered if you're transplanting in warm and/or dry weather.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!

is there a dwarf size mandarin?

Currently this is the only size we offer.

How tall is the clementine tree in each container when they ship?

They range to be around 2-3 feet tall.

Scab
Had scab and spread quickly. None of my other houseplants/trees have had this issue from other places I've purchased from. Hard to treat. Had to leave outside in Michigan weather so as not to spread to our other plants and trees indoors. Since it will not survive our winters here, just see it as a sunk cost.
