I don't the name of the apple tree. we had it on our farm when I was a child. my mother called it a snow apple. the apples were small, red, crisp and juicy. they stayed on the tree through most of the winter and still tasted wonderful. I remember picking them off the tree to eat in winter we lived just west of Chicago, il. any ideas as to what apples these were?

Based on your description, it sounds very likely that the apple you remember is the Snow Apple, also known as Fameuse.

Here’s why this fits:

Fameuse (Snow Apple)
Origin: One of the oldest varieties grown in North America, especially in colder regions.

Appearance: Small to medium-sized, deep red skin, often with a whitish bloom.

Flesh: Bright white, sometimes slightly pink-streaked—hence the name Snow Apple.

Texture: Crisp, juicy, and very tender.

Flavor: Sweet, slightly vinous, and aromatic.

Harvest Time: Typically late fall.

Cold Hardy: Yes – grows well in cold climates like northern Illinois.

Hangs on the tree: Can persist into early winter in cooler areas, especially if not all picked at harvest.

History: Widely grown in the 1800s and early 1900s, especially on homesteads and farms in the Midwest and Northeast.

Legacy
It’s also worth noting that McIntosh apples are believed to be descendants of Fameuse. The Snow Apple’s excellent flavor and cold-hardiness made it a parent to many modern varieties.
