Macoun Apple Tree
Description
About the Macoun Apple Tree
A northern favorite known for its exceptional flavor and crisp texture. Developed in 1923 at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, New York, Macoun is a cross between McIntosh and Jersey Black, combining the aromatic sweetness of McIntosh with improved firmness and eating quality.
The fruit is medium to large with deep red skin over a green background and bright white flesh that is crisp, juicy, and richly flavored. Often considered one of the best dessert apples, Macoun is especially prized for fresh eating, offering a sweet, slightly tart flavor that stands out early in the season.
Growing Macoun Apples
This cold-hardy apple tree is well-suited for northern climates and ripens in September, making it a great early-to-mid season option for home orchards. Macoun trees are moderately vigorous with a somewhat upright growth habit and produce reliable crops under the right conditions.
While highly valued for its flavor, Macoun benefits from good site selection and care, as it can be somewhat susceptible to some common apple diseases like scab and fire blight. However, it is notably resistant to cedar apple rust. Providing full sun, proper spacing, and good airflow will help support a healthy, productive tree.
Macoun apples are best enjoyed fresh, as they have a shorter storage life compared to other varieties—another reason they’re considered a true seasonal treat. A pollinator is required for optimal fruit production—choose another mid- to late-blooming apple variety for best results. See recommendations below.
For growers in cooler regions seeking a cold-hardy apple with outstanding flavor, Macoun remains a top choice and a staple of northeastern orchards.
A licensed variety of Cornell University.
